Since the relaunch of the Land Rover Defender and the disappearance of the Lada Niva and Suzuki Jimny from the market, there are essentially only two off-road icons left: the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. While the Toyota now sports a new retro-inspired look, the G-Class remains visually faithful to its iconic design. However, beneath the surface, there have been significant changes.
Exterior
The Mercedes G-Class is renowned for its unmistakable, boxy shape, which has remained largely unchanged even with its recent updates. Typical details such as the distinctive door handles, characteristic door closing sound, robust exterior protective strip, exposed spare wheel on the rear door, and mounted turn signals continue to define its appearance.
New updates include a grille with four horizontal slats instead of the previous three. Additionally, both front and rear bumpers have been redesigned, with the front ones receiving a new grille pattern. The rearview camera has been repositioned to the bumper, centrally located above the license plate holder. In case it gets dirty during driving, a washer nozzle is mounted on the bumper side of the rearview camera. This nozzle extends when the driver activates the rear window washer system.
Furthermore, conventional models adopt some elements developed for the first fully electric version of this off-road legend. Specifically, these include a new A-pillar trim and a spoiler lip on the roof trim, as well as new insulation materials aimed at improving aerodynamics and reducing interior noise levels. Here is the new Mercedes G-Class compared to the old model:

As standard, the new models come equipped with aerodynamically optimized, 45.7 centimeter (18-inch) large alloy wheels in a 5-double-spoke design and LED High Performance headlights. Newly available is the metallic color ‘sodalite blue’. Additionally, there are new wheel designs offered in sizes ranging from 45.7 to 50.8 centimeters (18 to 20 inches).
With the ‘PROFESSIONAL Line Exterieur’, customers can specifically emphasize the off-road character of their G-Class. This package includes features such as headlamp protection grilles, mud flaps, and 45.7 centimeter (18-inch) all-terrain tires. For a more luxurious and sporty look, there’s the ‘Exclusive Line’ or ‘AMG Line’.
Of course, there is also a new Mercedes-AMG G 63. Exclusive to the top model is the exterior color ‘MANUFAKTUR hyper blue magno’. Its front is characterized by a new AMG-specific bumper featuring three vertical louvres in front of the air intakes, with stainless steel inserts in the bumper.
Adaptive MULTIBEAM LED headlights are standard, equipped with intelligent light functions that illuminate the road appropriately according to the driving situation. They utilize 84 individually controlled high-performance LEDs to react to the current traffic conditions. The taillights are also implemented in LED technology.
